STEM challenge!

My Reflection

This term we did The Marshmallow Challenge. 

We did this to work together as a team, communicate and problem solve as a class. It also helped us build healthy competition. 

We found it challenging to think of a plan- this was so new to us! 

We all had allocated jobs so nobody missed out in contributing

We did a lot of trial and error tests

It was so hard to keep it straight and stable! 

We thought it would be easy but it was actually really hard!

Kakapo Information Report

The Kakapo   _ FLORENCE PENG

The Kakapo is a large friendly parrot. 

Kakapo are only found in New Zealand, and they are critically endangered. They are also the only nocturnal and flightless parrot in the whole world.

Appearance: 

The Kakapo is mostly green. It is very cute, if you have ever seen one. It has an owl-like face and a strong beak which points downwards. It is a very large Parrot. 

Habitat: 

The Kakapo on New Zealand off-coast remote islands. The islands are forested and have a lot of vegetation. They have no pests or predators. 

Diet: 

Kakapo are 100% vegetarian. They eat leaves, flowers and roots of trees.

Kakapo vs. Kiwi

WALT: Compare the Kiwi and Kakapo in a Venn Diagram.

I have been learning about these two birds for inquiry and writing this term. I have written information reports on them.

I found this activity easy because I did not have to write much, I just had to add in the facts I have already learnt when I researched earlier in the term. I did have to learn how to use this Venn Diagram website though, when I understood what to do, I found it easy.

My next step is to learn about some native New Zealand trees too.

WALT: Use Place Value Partitioning To Add Large Numbers

This term we have been learning Place value Partitioning, this is when you break big numbers apart to be able to add them up easier. 

I have shown you how I broke up 5104+3762 into Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones to add it easily.

This term we have been learning about Sir Edmund Hillary, we sorted out the relevant things and non-relevant things about him. 

I know that he is on the $5 note

He was the first person to climb to the summit of Mount Everest

He was born in NZ
